Do you remember the first time you heard a recording of your own voice? Did you recognize it as your own? Did it sound the way it does in your head? Or did it sound like it came out of some other body entirely?

At the Berlin Voice-Lab we explore the nature of our voice, it’s range and possibilities. I work with singers, actors, writers, performers, those faced with tasks of public speaking and those who might not have professional intentions, but simply want to get to know that core part of their sound and vocal expression.

Our process is a body-based experience. We learn to track how body, breath and voice produce sound. We learn to track what the body and nervous system do when faced with the challenge of speaking, singing and performing/public speaking and what role our imagination plays during these actions.

My name is Josepha Conrad. I am a writer, musician, and performer with more than 25 years of stage experience. In my voice lab and with the people who have worked with me there, I have developed a practice of exploration, tracking and reconfiguration. We take the voice apart; we analyse it and we put it back together. A kind architecture, a kind of sculpture, a kind of surgery. Sometimes participants come to me and just need a few visits to get some tools for a particular situation like preparing for the recording studio, a performance or a lecture. Sometimes participants begin a long process of exploration and mentoring that stretches over years.

I’m an artist and a practitioner who will accompany you on a deep exploration into the world of your own voice, your artist practice, your vocal journey, your understanding of being in a body faced with challenges, obstacles, pleasures and adventures. We practice concrete tools that help you understand volume and frequencies of your voice, we expand vocal range, we work with control and lack of control, we chisel our words, our articulation and we work with suggestion and imagination to explore how we can expand our understanding of our physical being and our expression. In a way it is hard to explain what exactly happens at the lab, because depending on what your background, goals and challenges are, we tailor a practice / exploration to your individual needs.

We meet at Harzer Strasse 119 in 12435 Berlin. You are welcome to come to the lab and find out more. First session is 45 minutes and is free of charge. After that I charge 65 for students and 80 Euro for professionals per session. Each session is one hour and fifteen minutes. Bring comfortable clothes and something to write on.
